Lagavulin Distillery
The Lagavulin distillery on Islay is home to one of the most famous whiskies in Scotland. The peat and the iodine of the sea give the famous Lagavulin a strong smoky taste, with light hints of sea salt, rich fruits and bitter tea. Lagavulin whiskies were long time considered to be the smokiest of the world and they are mostly bottled by the distillery itself. We find only rarely independent bottlings and almost no blends. 98% of the raw whisky is intended for maturation as single malt.
In the south of Islay, Lagavulin is located in a quiet and small bay, overlooking the castle ruins of Dunyvaig. The distillery’s water source is Lochan Sholum, 200 meters above sea level. Its water flows down the slope and gives the whisky its unmistakable taste.
Of all Islay whiskies, Lagavulin is working with the slowest distillation process. The first run needs about five hours and the second more than nine hours.
The wash is produced in a double distillation. They use unusual, pear-shaped stills, which provide a soft taste while maintaining a high phenolic content.
