Ledaig 18 years single malt tasting dram
The Ladaig is the smoky brand of the Tobermory Distillery, which is one of the oldest Scottish distilleries. It was founded in 1798 under the name Ledaig and is the only one on the island of Mull. In 1979 it was renamed after the new brand in Tobermory, but both brands are still produced today, always rotating every 6 months. While wonderful, non-smoky single malts are marketed under the Tobermory name, Ledaig stands for the smoky aromas.
Where does it come from?
The Ledaig 18 years single malt is the prove that the master distillers still create excellent smoky single malts in the original traditional style. It is bottled at 35ppm smoke and 46.8% alcohol. Therefore, it is in no way inferior to the peat content of the Islay distilleries. The finish is probably mainly done in Oloroso Sherry casks. It is uncolored and not chill-filtered and bottled in small batches of around 5400 bottles per year.
Ledaig means ‘safe harbour’ in Gaelic and on the packaging a boat pulled up on the beach symbolizes a safe return.
How does it taste?
The Ledaig 18 years single malt is dark and heavy, earthy and boggy. Strong, well-matured smoke with maritime hints is the dominant flavor component. This makes the Ledaig 18 years an unconditional recommendation for lovers of peat smoke aromas. The finish in Spanish sherry casks does in this case not provide any clear sherry notes, but rather a certain depth and complexity. This malt should be tasted with patience and a lot of attention. If you give your tongue time to get used to the smoke, wonderful floral and spicy aromas bloom behind it, as well as notes of freshly ground coffee that linger on the tongue for a long time.
